Vanishing Points: Poems and Photographs of Texas Roadside Memorials AVAILABLE NOW! This work is a collaboration between four accomplished poets – Jack B. Bedell, Sarah Cortez, Loueva Smith and Larry D. Thomas – along with graphic artist Nancy J. Parsons and me. Vanishing Points is edited by Sarah Cortez who, along with contributing her poetry, was the driving force and the creative inspiration behind the work. This work has its origins in 2006, when I began to really take notice of the numerous roadside memorials that I saw dotting the margins of roads and highways throughout central and south Texas. I remember stopping for the first time to look at one of these memorials and being very moved by it. There were many things that I found compelling about this subject. Sometimes there’d be almost no information and sometimes I’d find bits of information about the person who’d died there – a name, dates, etc. Often the site would contain personal items that would give you clues as to who this person was – Stuffed animals. A pair of glasses. Notes from friends. Photos. A can of beer. I found it impossible not to begin to tell myself a story about who the person was and what had happened here. Sometimes the story that I told was almost unbearably sad. These sites were often many years old and many had obviously received ongoing care and maintenance, speaking to what must have been a powerful sense of loss and grief for those left behind. Sometimes the sites were neglected and were beginning to recede into nature’s shadows, leaving a different kind of sadness behind. I began to photograph these sites in 2006 and a few years later showed some of these images to my longtime friend Sarah Cortez. In 2015, Sarah began to develop the idea of a project that would associate these images with poetry, letting the poet’s mind and words begin to tell the stories that are only hinted at by the sites. Sarah’s vision led to the collaboration that has resulted in this work.
